It took a long time, longer than Ico expected, before he had any results trying to learn the basic wind magic that granted an enhanced sense of hearing. In fact it wasn't until one day, when he had given up for the day and was walking home, that he had noticed anything different at all. As he walked home he picked up the curious sound of his heart thumping in his chest. Then he could feel the blood rush through his ears, and he became awkwardly aware of other sounds of his body's inner workings. As the sounds came to his attention they became louder, almost thundering. It was a bit frightening and he had to stop and clear his mind, trying to tune them out. Gradually he was able to push the sounds out of his mind. Once they quieted, it was then he noticed the sounds outside of himself. He could feel the wind sighing through the trees... but it wasn't just the trees nearby. He could hear the breeze through the whole wood. It sounded like the forest was breathing, or whispering. He could hear the water seeping up through the trunk of a tree nearby, and the distant wind high in the sky, shaping the clouds. All the birds, all the insects, wove their songs together into a kind of tone... he couldn't pick them out individually yet, but later on he would think that with practice, that might be something he could do. But for the moment, he was lost in the strange music, only just realizing that it was the wind bringing all these sounds along with it, like a song it was singing as it traveled.

It would still be awhile before he was able to perform this magic on command... but Ico had proven to himself that he could do it, and that made him very happy.

Well I am not great at visual direction yet but the surreal, swirly way the forest is painted is supposed to represent how Ico senses the sounds swirling around him, and that's why the style differs from the foreground. I'm also practicing lighting with some subsurface scattering, it's not perfect but it's a good start.
